How To Care For Your December Flowers

TIP ONE

This is always a busy month. If you do not have time to arrange your flowers immediately follow these simple steps:

  • Remove Gel Packs.

  • Cut the ends off all stems and place in a bucket of cold water.

  • Store in a cold dry place until you have time to arrange.

TIP TWO

Consider where you position your flowers in the house. Keep them away from direct heat - i.e next to radiators or fires as this will shorten their vase life.

TIP THREE

You might also be using vases or vessels at this time of year that you rarely use. Make sure these are very clean as bacteria will shorten the life of your flowers.

AMARYLLIS

Your Amaryllis will take four to five days to open from bud. If you wish to hold back before using the stems, store them in your FlowerBe box out of water in a cold storeroom. When you wish to use them, cut the stems and place in water but do remember that the buds take a while to open.

HYPERICUM

Leaves will die well before the berries do. Remove these and enjoy just the berries in a bud vase.

NARCISSUS

Change water every few days as the Narcissus releases a sap that clouds the water. To avoid this, leave the Narcissus out of a mixed arrangement and use on its own in a small vase.

ROSE ‘FREEDOM’ AND ‘MONDIAL’

Remove the outer ‘guard’ petals that may still be on the rose. These protect the more delicate display petals.

To avoid air bubbles forming up the stem, make your angled cut under water and then place your rose immediately in the vase.

ROSE WILT / DROOPY HEADS

The most likely cause of wilt is air trapped in the stem of your rose. Follow these simple steps to revive your stems:

  • Remove your rose from the arrangement

  • Re-cut the stem and place this in about 15cm of boiling water.

  • You will notice air bubbles expel from the new cut

  • Leave stem in water until all bubbles are expelled.

  • Re-cut and replace in fresh water.
